A union leader was thrashed by team of sanitation workers from municipal council of Pratapgarh after he tried to prevent the sanitation workers from clicking pictures of women defecating in the open. The union leader died from the incident.
The incident happened yesterday in Pratapgarh when Zafar Khan (55) tried to stop team of sanitation workers from clicking pictures of women who were defecating in the open. The workers were clicking the picture with the objective of shaming them and attempting to discourage them from open defecation.
This led to a scuffle between him and the sanitation team. Khan argued that women had no other option because of lack of toilets in their homes and that community toilets were not functional due to lack of maintenance. Heater argument gave way to fight and Khan was badly beaten up. He was rushed to hospital but he died while undergoing treatment.
Municipal council announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 Lakh for Zafar’s family.
