Srilatha Memorial foundation stone  laid by Central Committee member Prabhat Chaudhury

A memorial shall be built in memory of Srilatha Swaminathan at her residence in Ghantali, Pratapgarh. CPI(ML) central Committee member Prabhat Choudhury , state secretary Mahendra Chaudhary , state committee member Shanker Lal Chaudhary and her associates laid down the foundation stone of her memorial at Ghantali on 5th March, 2017.

The national President of All India Progressive Women’s Association (AIPWA) and  former member of the central committee  of the CPI (ML) Liberation Srilatha Swaminathan passed away in the morning of 5th Feb. 2017 at Udaipur, Rajasthan.A Sankalp Yatra was flagged off on 28th Feb. 2017 from Udaipur which travelled through nearly two hundred villages and reached Ghantali on 4th March. On 5th March , 2017 a Sankalp Sabha was organized which was attended by hundreds of local people Adivasies as well as others.

Addressing the meeting Comrade Mahendra Chaudhary, secretary CPI(ML) Rajasthan said that Srilatha, along with him,  had  moved to Ghantali, a small village which was in Banswara district then, in 1978. She stayed there for many years and led strong movements against forcible displacement of tribal people particularly the oustees of Mahi dam and also the Sardar Sarovar Dam on Narmada river. She organized hotel workers, slum dwellers, bonded labour and farmers. The Rajasthan Kisan Sanghathan was a formidable force which led the peasants to a strong struggle against feudal oppression, loot of the tribal people and peasants by the trading class as well as against the police and forest officials.

Comrade Shanker Lal Chaudhary, member state committee pf CPI(ML) said that  Srilatha was the President of Rajasthan Kisan Sangathan for some years and in her leadership the peasant uprising at Hadmatiya took place. She was appointed Supreme Court Commissioner twice -once for the bonded labour in Rajasthan and then for the oustees of Narmada dam. He said that her boldness and commitment to people attracted him to the party and he decided to work for the people.

Central Committee member Prabhat Choudhury in his addressed stated that Srilatha Swaminathan joined CPI (ML) in 1972 and was elected to be a member of the central committee in 1997. She remained a member of the central committee for fifteen years when for health reasons she requested the party to free her from this responsibility in 2013. She also served the party organizations as the Vice President of AICCTU and President of AIPWA. Her leadership made her a national leader who was seriously concerned with the suffering of the people.

Dr. C.D. Ola, district secretary of the party said that he learnt many things working with her and it was a great dedication that she had for the people.  Since 2011 she had been confined to bed but she did not leave her field in the village Ghantali and was living there  till her last  where she suffered a massive brain stroke on 29th Jan and was moved to Udaipur for treatment. The meeting was addressed by dr. L.R. Patel, Dr. L.R. Jat, Ms. Pragnya Joshi, Himanshu Pandya, Comrade Saurabh, former Sarpanch of Ghantali village rattan Lal Ninama state committee member Shanti Lal Trivedi, Phool Chand Dheva and others. The Meeing was convened by Prof. H.S.Chandalia.
