Menar lake, often referred to as the bird village of the region is currently playing host to thousands of beautiful migratory Bar headed goose.

These white goose have a black strip on there heads giving them the name of bar headed goose. They are also known as Raj Hans, Savan or Birwa.

Bird specialists claim that the birds have flown from Tibet and/or Laddakh to spend the winters here. Because of presence of special type of amino acid in their blood, these birds can also survive in extreme winter conditions.

These birds are claimed to be one of highest flying species. The goose can fly non-stop for upto 8 hours. It is claimed that the birds fly over the 8000 mtr high mountains in Himalaya and cross over during the migratory season.

The birds have a beautiful neck and their movement is particularly attrative. The birds fly in formation and are a treat to the eye.
