Waltair Division of the East Coast Railway has created a record by constructing a subway under four-line railways crossing in four and a half hours. A time lapsed video of the construction has been shared and shows how the entire construction took place.

Waltair Division of the East Coast Railway has created a record by constructing a subway under four-line railways crossing in four and a half hours. A time lapsed video of the construction has been shared and shows how the entire construction took place.

Normally, it takes about 6-8 hours for constructing a limited height subway in India under TWO lines. The Waltair division has constructed the subway under FOUR lines in 4.5 hours. This accomplishment was a result of exceptional planning, coordination and mobilization of resources.

This subway was constructed at a busy manned section on gate number 484 between Pendurti and Kottavalsa stations on the Kolkata-Chennai route covering 38 mtrs under 4 main line tracks. The subway is part of the initiative taken by Indian Railways for eliminating manned and unmanned crossing gates across several places in the country.

Press release about issued by Railways said that, “6 heavy duty excavators, 3 heavy duty cranes, 5 tippers, 4 Hydra machines, heavyweight jacks, 1,000 sand bags and a workforce of 300”. The release also said that all the four lines were closed for constructing the subway. The subway was constructed using 20 concrete segments of equal size and 15 base blocks.
