Wayanad Floods: 73 Confirmed Dead, Several Others Feared Missing

Landslides occurred on the morning of July 30, 2024 in Wayanad. Affected areas include the villages of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha in Wayanad, Kerala. 73 People are confirmed to be dead and several people are still missing.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased.

Massive Destruction

Extensive destruction happened  with destroyed houses, swollen water bodies, and uprooted trees. Vehicles are stuck or submerged in floodwaters.

Rescue operations are delayed due to huge boulders blocking access and heavy rains hampering the work. Rescue teams are transporting the injured and deceased despite challenges. 

Heavy Rainfall Alert

In the last 24 hours up to 5:00 AM. on July 30, Padinjarathara in Wayanad saw the most rainfall at 298 mm. It was followed by Cheruvanchery and Kollengode, both with 233 mm. Anakkayam had 227 mm, Kannur airport recorded 226 mm, Parambikulam got 216 mm, and Ayyankunnu had 204 mm.

Today on July 30, Kerala is expected to experience very heavy rainfall due to the southwest monsoon intensifying. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extreme heavy rain in five districts: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. An orange alert, indicating very heavy rain, is in place for seven districts: Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Pathanamthitta. Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram will see heavy rainfall.
