A nationwide bandh “Bharat Bandh” on 8th December 2020 has been declared following the protest of the farmers against the government’s farm laws. 20 opposition parties are supporting the farmers in their protests. The demands of the farmed have earned support from Shiv Sena, Congress, AAP, DMK, Kamal Haasan's MNM, Left parties, TMC, TRS, and NDA constituent RLP.

A high level meeting has been called to review the law and order situation ahead of the planned bandh. The farmers said that it was mutually agreed by the unions that farmers from the different states would be included in this nationwide protest.

The demands from the farmers are “non-negotiable”, as stated by the farmers and the next round of their agenda demands total reversal of the farm laws through a special parliamentary session. The Farmer Union leader, addressing a press conference on Friday, said that if the Centre does not accept their demands by Saturday, the agitation would be intensified and they would even occupy toll plazas.

There have been 5 rounds of talks between the government and the representatives of the farmers and as per the talks on Thursday; Union Agriculture Minister had hinted that the government would amend 3 major provisions in the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce Act. It was also stated that the Farm Laws will not be rolled back, only amendments would be made to them. It has also been stated that the new laws passed by the government will give freedom to the farmers.
