While many colonies of Udaipur, where navratri is always celebrated with excitement and joy are preparing for the nine days festival, but for the residents of Bhopalwari it was not a happy beginning of navratri preparation as it turned into an ugly fight on the night of 19 September. The issue started when the two groups of the area; the residents and the shopkeepers started arguing on erecting of a ‘Pandal’ for 10 days to observe prayers and play Garba.

The shopkeepers of the area objected on celebrating navratari in Bhopalwadi as it affects their business for 10 days. “Most of the shops are of clothes and utensils which are mostly bought in this season,” says one of the shopkeepers. Another shopkeeper told us, “The area is congested; we face major loss in Navratri due to the pandal which create problem for daily commuters on this road.” While the group of residents says, ”It is a matter of our religious belief and in order to continue the event without any problem we have given a memorandum to additional magistrate today,” said Pankaj Sahu. Kanhiya lal Jain, one of the shopkeepers from the area said, “They gave memorandum last year too and promised ADM that it will be their last event as it had already completed 9 years, but breaking the last year’s promise they have again started this time”. Last night while digging the road to stand pillars, an argument between both the groups started which turned worse and the situation came under control after police intervention.
