Bombay High Court Upholds Acquittal in Sohrabuddin Encounter Case

Udaipur, May 7, 2026: The Bombay Hight court on Thursday, May 7, upheld the acquittal of the 22 accused in the in-famous alleged fake encounter case of gangster Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kausar Bi and his close aide Tulsi Prajapati.

As per media reports, the Bench of Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhad dismissed the appeals filed by Shaikh's brothers - Rubabuddin and Nayabuddin, challenging the December 2018 judgment of a special court of the acquittal of all the accused in the case.

Those acquitted includes 21 junior level police officers both from Gujarat and Rajasthan that were allegedly a part of the team that had allegedly abducted Sheikh and his wife and later killed them and in a staged encounter. One of them was the owner of the farm house, in which Sohrabuddin and his wife and aide were kept after being abducted, reports suggest. 

The special court, while acquitting the accused, had observed that the prosecution failed to establish a cogent case to suggest there had been any conspiracy to kill Shaikh and the others, and that the present accused persons had any role in it. 

However the reports suggests that the copy of the detailed order will be provided later. 

The gangster Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kausar were killed on November 25, 2005 while Tulsi who was also a key witness of  Shiekh and wife's killing and was lodged in Udaipur Jail was later killed in the year 2006.

The investigation of the case was later handed over to CBI by the Supreme Court and the trial was shifted to Mumbai.
