Dec 1, 2025 - Now, opening a Capital Gains account has become easy with the government expanding the network of banks offering the Capital Gains Account Scheme (CGAS). Now, people can open a Capital Gains account in 19 banks across the country. Earlier, only a few government banks, like SBI, BoB, and IDBI Bank, offered CGAS.

Capital Gains account can now be opened in HDFC, ICICI, Axis, City Union Bank, DCB, IDFC First Bank, IndusInd Bank, J&K Bank, Karnataka Bank, Karur Vysya Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, RBL, South Indian Bank, Yes Bank, Dhanlaxmi Bank, Bandhan Bank, CSB Bank and Tamilnad Mercantile Bank.

This facility will be available only in non-rural branches where the population is more than 10,000.

The CGAS allows taxpayers to deposit unutilised long-term capital gains into a special bank account to remain eligible for tax exemptions under specific sections of the Income Tax Act.

On selling stocks, Mutual Funds or any kind of property (house), you have to pay Capital Gains tax on the profit earned. Paying this tax can be avoided if the money is kept in the CGAS. Because, if you keep the profit received from selling a property in your regular bank account, you will have to pay 12.5% LTCG tax. But if you deposit this amount under the CGAS, you do not have to pay tax.

You can now keep the money in the CGAS for a maximum of three years, which means you will not have to hurry to reinvest the gains in new assets immediately.
