Feb 25, 2026 - A new NCERT Social Science textbook for Class 8 has caused a row to erupt among the judiciary because of a reference to “judicial corruption” in a chapter of the book titled “The Role of the Judiciary in Our Society”.

Taking note of this, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Wednesday (February 25) slammed it describing it as a “tentatively calculated, deep-rooted attempt” to denigrate the judicial system and said the Court will not permit any attack on the judicial institution.

The matter was brought to the notice of the Supreme Court by senior Advocates Kapil Sabil and Dr Abhishek Manu who termed it deeply disturbing. The CJI said he was aware of the issue and had received several calls and messages by judges who were “perturbed” by the book’s contents.

“I have already passed an order and am taking the matter suo motu,” the CJI said, adding, “I will not allow anyone on earth to taint the integrity of the institution and defame the institution. At any cost, I will not permit it. Whosoever high it may be, the law will take its course. I know how to deal with it.”

The chapter in question talks about the Supreme Court having around 81,000 pending cases because of insufficient infrastructure and logistical issues. It cites “corruption in judiciary” and “massive backlogs” as huge challenges.
