Udaipur, May 1, 2025: Senior Congress leader from Udaipur and former State President of the Congress in Rajasthan, Dr. Girija Vyas breathed her last on May 1, 2025 at the age of 79.

Girija Vyas got burnt in freak accident on March 31, 2025, when she was performing puja (aarti) of Maa Ghanghor at her residence. She sustained 95% burns and was under treatment at the Zydus hospital in Ahmedabad. Doctors at the hospital had been treating her and the lady being strong willed, fought for her life for nearly 30 days, following which she finally succumbed to the burn injuries.

Personal

Born in Nathdwara on July 8, 1946 to Krishna Sharma and Jamuna Devi Vyas, Dr. Girija was also a poet and authored 8 books, three of which contain her poetry. Her Urdu poems were published in the book titled Ehsaas Ke Paar, Hindi poems in Seem Samundar aur Moti and English poems enriched Nostalgia.

Political Career

Her foray into politics began with the Congress party, and in 1985 she was elected as MLA from Udaipur and served as Minister in the Rajasthan government till 1990. She was then elected as MP from Udaipur in 1991 and served as Deputy Minister of Information and Broadcasting under the Narsimha Rao government. She was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996, 1999 and 2013. She served as Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation from 2013 till 2014 under the Manmohan Singh government.
