Court Highlights Key Role of Housewife in Family's Financial Stability
The Punjab & Haryana High Court doubled accident compensation for a deceased housewife to Rs 1.18 crore, highlighting her invaluable economic role in the family
Jan 20, 2026 – In a landmark decision, the Punjab and Haryana High Court emphasised the economic role of housewives in a family and doubled the compensation for the family of a housewife, who died in a road accident. The Court ruled that a housewife’s work is invaluable and has a significant market value thus highlighting the crucial role a housewife plays in maintaining the family’s financial stability.
Justice Sudeepti Sharma accepted the appeal of the deceased housewife’s husband and doubled the compensation awarded by the Lower Court (Accident Tribunal) from Rs 58.22 lakh to Rs 1.18 crore.
The Court noted that the Tribunal erred in undervaluing the housewife’s notional income and did not account for future earnings. This was also contrary to previous Supreme Court decisions.
The Court reassessed Jasbir Singh’s monthly income at Rs 15,000 instead of Rs 9,000 and, after adding other expenses plus inflationary costs (the accident occurred in 214), directed that compensation of Rs 1.18 crore be awarded.
