Udaipur-Pindwara Highway Becomes Hazardous Due to Narrow Cuts

Dangerous cuts on Udaipur-Pindwara highway pose safety risk; it is hard to see oncoming vehicles from the opposite direction

Devla Chauraha Cut

Udaipur, January 30, 2025 - The Udaipur-Pindwara highway has become dangerous due to slopes and poorly organized cuts. One of the most concerning issues is a 5-meter-wide cut at Devla Chauraha that serves as the only access point for Kotra. This narrow cut makes it difficult for vehicles to pass through, and there is no signboard or speed breaker to alert drivers.

Traffic Issues and Local Concerns
Local residents have reported that the cut is so narrow that only one vehicle can pass at a time. Additionally, it is hard to see oncoming vehicles from the opposite direction. Around 200 jeeps, autos, roadways buses, and bikes travel this route daily, making the situation even more dangerous.

NHAI Response to the Issue
Officials from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) explained that these cuts were created during the highway's construction in 2006 when traffic was much lower. However, with the increase in traffic, the cuts are being modified. Recently, the width of a cut at Malwa Ka Chora was increased from 5 meters to 15 meters, and safety measures like signal lights were added after a tragic accident that resulted in six deaths in January.

Safety Audit Highlights Additional Problems
In September last year, NHAI conducted a road safety audit on a 120 km stretch of the Udaipur-Pindwara highway. The audit revealed issues such as illegal cuts, unauthorized parking, and overgrown trees along the roadside, further highlighting the need for improvements in road safety.
