BJP’s Debangshu Panda Crushes TMC in Falta Repoll as Jahangir Khan Slips to Fourth Place
The Falta Assembly repoll turned into a massive embarrassment for the Trinamool Congress as BJP candidate Debangshu Panda stormed ahead with a record-breaking lead. TMC nominee Jahangir Khan slipped to fourth place after withdrawing from active campaigning, making the result politically significant for West Bengal ahead of future elections.
May 24, 2026: The Falta Assembly repoll turned into a massive political victory for the BJP on Sunday, as party candidate Debangshu Panda stormed to a record-breaking lead of more than 76,000 votes, dealing a major setback to the Trinamool Congress in the once-dominant Diamond Harbour belt.
Riding on overwhelming public support, Panda emerged as one of the biggest winners of the 2026 election cycle. His landslide performance came after Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari appealed to voters to ensure a victory margin of over one lakh votes — a target that appeared well within reach as counting progressed.
The political atmosphere in Falta shifted dramatically even before polling day after Trinamool candidate Jahangir Khan, popularly known as “Pushpa,” virtually withdrew from active campaigning. His sudden step back from the contest significantly altered the electoral landscape and weakened the ruling party’s position in the constituency.
From the very first round of counting, the BJP established complete dominance. Panda took an early lead of over 9,000 votes, while Jahangir Khan managed only 210 votes initially and continued to trail throughout the day. In a stunning development, the Trinamool candidate eventually slipped to fourth place, behind both the CPI(M) and Congress nominees.
"Pushpa Raj has ended, now common people will rule Falta and there will be development in the state."

BJP Turns Falta Into Symbolic Political Victory
After 16 rounds of counting, Debangshu Panda had secured 1,11,270 votes. CPI(M) candidate Sambhu Nath Kurmi stood second with 34,873 votes, while Congress candidate Abdur Razzak Molla received 9,284 votes. Jahangir Khan of the Trinamool Congress managed only 5,319 votes in what became one of the party’s most embarrassing electoral performances in recent years.
The scale of the BJP’s victory transformed the Falta repoll from a local electoral contest into a politically symbolic battle with wider implications for West Bengal politics. The Diamond Harbour region had long been projected as a Trinamool stronghold due to the party’s extensive organisational network and aggressive campaigning machinery.
However, the narrative changed sharply after Jahangir Khan announced that he was stepping aside “for the interest of Falta.” He also cited assurances regarding a special development package from Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari as one of the reasons behind his decision, triggering major political controversy.
The Trinamool Congress quickly distanced itself from Khan’s remarks, describing his move as a personal decision. During the repoll, the party’s campaign presence remained minimal, with several local offices reportedly inactive.
The repoll itself was ordered following serious allegations surrounding the April 29 voting process. Complaints regarding suspicious substances, unusual ink markings, adhesive tapes on EVMs, and alleged tampering of web-camera footage prompted the Election Commission to conduct fresh polling across all 285 booths in the constituency.
Held under tight security arrangements with nearly 35 companies of central forces deployed, the repoll witnessed a voter turnout of more than 87 percent among Falta’s 2.36 lakh electorate, reflecting intense public interest in the high-stakes contest.
