Jan 6, 2026 - Delcy Rodriguez, Vice-President of Venezuela was on Monday (January 5) sworn in as interim President of the country even as ousted President Nicolas Maduro pleaded not guilty in a New York Court and declared that he was still President of Venezuela. The captured leader has been charged with drug trafficking and terrorism.

Rodriguez has, however, said she was only the interim President and that Maduro was the “only” President. She has offered to collaborate with the US government but also slammed its invasion of Caracas and subsequent capturing of President Maduro. She said she was “in pain over the kidnapping of our heroes, the hostages in the United States”.

The oath-taking ceremony was held two days after the capture of Maduro. Rodriguez was sworn in during a session of the National Assembly and in attendance of her brother and president of the National Assembly  Jorge Rodriguez, and Deputy Nicolas Maduro Guerra. The Veneuzuelan Parliament has vowed to support her but at the same demanded the release of Maduro from US custody.
