More than 1.5 crore voters to choose 70 legislators; January 17 will be the last date to file nomination and counting will be held on February 8
January 7, 2025 – The Election Commission (EC) announced dates for the eighth Delhi Assembly elections at a press conference today. As per the schedule released, Delhi will go to votes on February 5 and counting will be on February 8. The voting will be done in a single phase. January 17 has been announced as the last date to file nomination and name withdrawal date has been given as January 20.
According to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, there will be a total of 1.55 crore voters in this election, including more than 2 lakh first-time voters. There are 70 Assembly constituencies in Delhi, with 12 of them reserved, and a total of 13,033 polling stations.
"Electoral rolls were released yesterday. We are crossing 99 crore voters... We are going to be a nation of one billion voters very soon, which will be another record in voting," Kumar said.
The EC has announced several initiatives to make the voting experience smooth. Arrangements would be made for the elderly and persons with disabilities to access polling booths without difficulty. Voters above 85 years of age will be able to cast their vote at home.
The term of the 70-member Legislative Assembly will end on February 23. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is the incumbent ruling party of Delhi, has pushed its workers to go all-out to ready for the elections.
"Even the biggest systems fail before your passion. You are our greatest strength. This is an election between the politics of work and the politics of abuses. We will surely win," Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal said in a post on X.
On the other hand, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) too is gearing up to fight the elections which is being seen as a battle of prestige between the ruling party at the Centre and the ruling party in Delhi.
Union Health Minister and BJP president JP Nadda said, "I urge the people of Delhi to choose a government that focuses on improving the standard of living, combating corruption, reducing pollution and providing quality services to make everyday life easier.”
