Security heightened, Section 163 imposed as a ‘jatha’ of more than 100 farmers to take part in ‘Dilli Chalo’ rally
December 6, 2024 – Delhi braces for traffic jams and administrative chaos as the farmers, who have been protesting for months now, are readying to march to the Parliament this afternoon. Security has been tightened at the Delhi-Noida borders as a “jatha” of 101 farmers will participate in the “Dilli Chalo” rally from Shambhu border at 1:00 pm today.
The farmers have been sitting in protests at the border locations under several farmer organisations banners, including Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM). An attempt was made by farmers from Uttar Pradesh to march to the Parliament on December 2 but it was thwarted by security forces.
Central paramilitary forces have been positioned on the Haryana side of the border. Both the Punjab and Haryana administration have deployed additional security forces to prevent traffic disruptions and maintain law and order. The Ambala district administration in Haryana has imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to prohibit large gatherings.
The protesting farmers’ demands include a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP), debt waivers, restoration of the Land Acquisition Act, pensions for farmers and labourers, a freeze on electricity tariff hikes and implementation of high power committee orders.
