Democrat Zohran Mamdani Wins NYC Mayor Elections; Creates History

Donald Trump’s late-stage attacks calling Mamdani a 'Jew hater' backfire amid broader Democratic wins in New Jersey and Virginia signalling a shift in US political mood

Nov 5, 2025 – Democrat Zohran Mamdani has won the New York City mayoral elections becoming the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century. When he takes office on January 1, 2026, he will also be creating history by becoming the first Indo-American, the first born in Africa and the first Muslim mayor to occupy City Hall of New York City.

The 34-year-old Mamdani defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a bitterly-fought contest that involved intense campaigning, fierce attacks on heritage and questions against policies. The Ugandan-born Mamdani faced the most personal attacks from Republican US President Donald Trump who had called him a “communist” and, in an eleventh-hour push, a “Jew hater”.

“Any Jewish person that votes for Zohran Mamdani, a proven and self professed JEW HATER, is a stupid person!!!” the Republican President had posted on his social media platform.

Mamdani, a State lawmaker from Queens borough, is the son of well-known Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani. He has fought this election on the promise of making New York City affordable, constructing two lakh public housing units, tuition-free education, fare-free city bus travel, childcare and city-run grocery stores.

Elsewhere, in Virginia and New Jersey, Democrats won the Governor polls thereby indicating a shift in the political mood in the country. In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill beat Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a businessman backed by Trump, while in Virginia Democrat Abigail Spanberger unseated Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears.
