Udaipur, December 9,2024 - Udaipur's archaeological site Ahar have unveiled a remarkable collection of punch-mark coins, dating back to 600 BC-1000 BC. These discoveries provide valuable insights into a period of Indian history known as the "Dark Age."

The "Dark Age" refers to the time between the decline of the Indus Valley Civilization (around 1900 BC) and the era of Lord Buddha (around 600 BC). The coins found in Udaipur, along with other sites like Ahar, Kalibanga, Viratnagar, and Jankipura, are believed to shed light on this lesser-known era.

The punch-mark coins are decorated with symbols like the Sun, Shadchakra, and Mountains/Meru, and are made from silver and copper. Each coin weighs approximately 3.3 grams.

So far, over 2.21 lakh ancient coins have been collected, including 7,180 punch-marked coins in Rajasthan, under the Rajasthan Treasure Trove Rules, 1961. These findings add to the growing understanding of ancient Indian cultures and their economic systems.
