The Cassini spacecraft of NASA is all set to take images of Earth from a distance of 1.44 billion kms away, while orbiting around planet Saturn on 19th July. Planet earth is expected to merely appear as a star in the photograph.
The interesting fact will be that our huge earth will be clicked as a single point of light. Previous such image was titled ‘Pale Blue Dot’ which was taken in 1990 by Voyager 1 spacecraft, which was 6 billion kms away from earth orbiting around Pluto.
According to IUCAA Resource Center, Udaipur, this event is rare and is important to the Celestial Study world.
As quoted by Linda Spilker, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California on NASA’s online wire, “While Earth will be only about a pixel in size from Cassini’s vantage point 898 million [1.44 billion kilometers] away, the team is looking forward to giving the world a chance to see what their home looks like from Saturn”.
The ring of Saturn will be directly eclipsing the Sun so the rings will be visible, but the remaining portion of the planet will be silhouetted, Earth would be visible in the bottom right of its ring pattern.
As quoted by an International News wire, Cassini captured Earth twice in the past, in year 2006 and 2012 respectively, but this time it will be an all together different view.
