Seismometer, a device used to detect and record earthquakes has been installed in Geological sciences department of Mohan Lal Sukhadia University. This is Rajasthan’s third such device with other installations being in Jaisalmer and Ajmer.

With the help of this device, geologists will now be able to accurately detect epicentre of earthquake within 50kms of around Udaipur along with the time of earthquake and earthquake’s sound wave.

Faculty Chairman of the department, Prof Harsh said that the Seismometer was recently installed in Udaipur by New Delhi based National Seismology Centre. The results from this Seismometer will be accurate to the degree of 0.1%.

While this Seismometer may not give a forecast of upcoming earthquake, but there might be an indication of the same via analysis of sound waves emanating from underground.
