July 10, 2025 – An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 on the Richter scale struck Delhi and NCR regions at 9:04 am today (July 10) with epicentre located in Jhajjar, Haryana. Tremors were felt as far as Meerut and Shamli in western Uttar Pradesh (UP), about 200 km from the epicentre.
Tremors, lasting about 10 seconds, were felt across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and parts of UP. Residents rushed out of their homes on feeling the tremors which were reportedly strong.
The National Institute of Seismology reported the earthquake's depth to be 10 kms.
Authorities are said to be closely monitoring the situation although no injuries or structural damage have been reported so far. Emergency services remain cautious and residents are advised to stay alert for possible aftershocks and follow guidance from local authorities.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) put out an advisory as soon as the tremors were felt. Residents were advised to not panic but immediately move outdoors and avoid taking elevators. Those driving were told to pull over to an open space.
According to the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, Delhi has experienced at least five earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.5 or higher on the Richter scale since 1720. Delhi lies in Seismic Zone IV, a high-risk region prone to moderate earthquakes owing to its proximity to both the Himalayas and local fault lines like the Aravalli-Delhi Fold Belt, the Delhi-Haridwar ridge and the Delhi-Moradabad fault which also add to the seismic risk of the region.
