The Election Commission of India (ECI) has praised the “highest ever” turnout in both States which signalled strong voter engagement. “EC salutes each voter of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu,” said Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, hailing the highest-ever polling percentage since Independence.
As per reports, ECI officials have described the record voter-turnout as another vindication of the SIR exercise and indication of people’s faith in the electoral process.
The overall turnout exceeded the 84.7% and 78.3% recorded by West Bengal and Tamil Nadu respectively in the 2011 Assembly elections. In the 2011 polls, West Bengal had recorded 84.72% voter turnout and for Tamil Nadu it was 78.29%.
