Ex-SC Judge Sudarshan Reddy is INDIA Bloc Nominee for Vice President
New Delhi, Aug 19, 2025 - The INDIA bloc has announced Sudarshan Reddy as their Vice President candidate. This announcement was made by Congress Party president Mallikarjun Kharge.
Balakrihna Sudarshan Reddy is a former Judge of the Supreme Court of India and he will be pitted against the NDA candidate CP Radhaksrishnan who is currently holding the office of Governor of Maharashtra.
Kharge, in his statement on the nomination, said the contest for the chair of Vice President is an ideological battle and the Opposition (including the Aam Aadmi Party) has unitedly agreed to the candidature of Reddy who will file his nomination on August 21.
The Vice President is elected through a secret ballot (Article 66(1)) by the MPs in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
Who is B Sudarshan Reddy
Reddy has had a long and illustrious career in the judiciary. He has served as a Judge in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, then served as Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court and Judge of the Supreme Court of India. Through his career, he has championed the cause of social and economical justice.
Born in 1946, Reddy began his career as an Advocate in 1971. He practiced in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, mainly in matters related to writ and civil cases. Between 1988 till 1990, he served as the Government Pleader in the Andhra Pradesh HC. He then briefly worked as standing counsel fo the Central government in 1990 followng which he served as Legal Advisor and Standing Counsel for the Osmania University.
His career transitioned into judiciary and he was appointed permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 1995. Ten years later, in 2005 he took oath as the Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court. Two years later in 2007 he was appointed as Judge in the Supreme Court of India from where he retired four years later in 2011. He also briefly served as the first Lok Ayukt of Goa in 2013.
