Udaipur, December 19,2024 - NCPI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), a subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is set to expand its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to six countries in 2025. These countries include Qatar, Thailand, and other Southeast Asian nations, which are popular with Indian tourists.

Currently, UPI services are available in Nepal, Bhutan, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, UAE, Singapore, and France. The NPCI is also collaborating with Peru, Namibia, and Trinidad and Tobago to help them develop their own payments systems. Additionally, the NPCI is working with the UAE and Mauritius to introduce card schemes like Rupay.

A new upgrade to UPI now allows Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in 10 countries to use UPI with their NRE or NRO accounts linked to international mobile numbers. Previously, NRIs needed an Indian mobile number to use UPI.

Since its launch in 2016, UPI has revolutionized digital payments in India, boosting transaction volumes nine times. A report by Paysecure showed that UPI leads the world in transaction volumes, processing 3,729 transactions per second in 2023, surpassing the combined total of the next three competitors.
