Farooq Abdullah Survives Assassination Bid in Jammu
NC leader and former J&K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah survives an assassination attempt in Jammu’s Greater Kailash area; accused has been detained and police have launched an investigation
March 12, 2026 - National Conference (NC) president and former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister (CM) Farooq Abdullah survived an assassination attempt on Wednesday night (March 11) in Jammu’s Greater Kailash area.
The attack took place at around 10:10 pm when Abdullah was walking out from a wedding venue. He says he heard a sharp noise like a firecracker and was immediately rushed into his car by his security personnel. The accused, identified as 63-year-old Kamal Singh Jamwal of Purani Mandi in Jammu, was overpowered and taken into custody.
“The assailant managed to get right behind my neck, but at the last minute, security deflected his arm just as the trigger was pulled,” said Abdullah.
As per reports, Jamwal told investigators he had been waiting for 20 years to attack Abdullah. The motive is still unclear as his statements have been inconsistent. Police say the accused appeared inebriated at the time of the shooting. They have for now ruled out terror links, and say the motive could instead be a “radicalised personal grievance”.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation across party lines, particularly questioning the security lapse for a senior leader of Abdullah's stature. The NC president also questioned the lack of adequate security arrangements at the event particularly when several high‑profile guests were present.
“There are more questions than answers at the moment, including how someone was able to get this close to a Z+ NSG-protected former CM,” said Abdullah’s son and J&K CM Omar Abdullah.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Farooq Abdullah assuring him that the matter will be thoroughly investigated.
