February 5, 2025 – The Indian Ministry of Finance has restricted the use of AI tools on official government devices. This directive was issued by the Ministry on January 29 to important departments, including Revenue, Financial Services, Economic Affairs, Expenditure, Public Enterprises and DIPAM.

The decision to avoid the use of AI tools and applications like ChatGPT and DeepSeek was taken with the purpose to safeguard confidential government information from possible security threats. The circular, signed by Joint Secretary Pradeep Kumar Singh, has directed employees to refrain from using such tools on official devices.

"It has been determined that AI tools and AI apps (such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek etc.) in the office computers and devices pose risks for confidentiality of (government) data and documents," the Finance Ministry’s circular said.

This restriction follows similar ban on AI usage previously imposed by governments and businesses worldwide with many private companies and global organisations limiting AI usage to prevent data exposure.
