India’s First Cooperative Taxi Service Launched; to Rival Ola/Uber?
Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launches Bharat Taxi, a cooperative-based ride service with zero commission, no surge pricing and fares expected to be up to 30% cheaper than Ola and Uber
Feb 6, 2026 - The Central Government formally launched India’s first cooperative-based taxi service - Bharat Taxi - on Thursday (February 5). Union Home Minister and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inaugurated this cooperative-based taxi platform at Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi. The symbolic launch was marked by a rally of 100 cars from Indira Gandhi International Airport to Vigyan Bhavan.
The service has currently started in Delhi and is planned to expand to every city across the country within the next three years.
"In three years, Bharat Taxi will be rolled out across the country, from Kashmir to Kanniyakumari and Dwarka to Kamakhya," Shah said
This initiative is expected to challenge the dominance of private companies like Ola and Uber. Since there is no commission, the service will be cheaper.
At the inauguration ceremony, Shah said it is not the government but the cooperative sector that is entering the taxi industry. He said Bharat Taxi is a platform where every driver, called a “Sarathi,” will be the owner of their taxi. This means that the earnings from the platform will not go to company shareholders but will return to the driver community itself, since they will be stakeholders in it.
There will be no commission and no surge pricing (higher fares during peak hours). Payments will go directly into the driver’s bank account, eliminating the role of middlemen.
According to the Ministry, the platform will include two-wheeler, three-wheeler and four-wheeler services. A special initiative called “Sarathi Didi” will also be launched for women riders and drivers. And if a passenger selects the option in the app, a female driver will be assigned for the ride.
Sarathis of Bharat Taxi will receive benefits such as free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh, insurance, affordable loans, subsidies and all schemes for gig workers
