Former PM Manmohan Singh Laid to Rest

Last rites of the departed leader performed with full State honours at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi today, December 28; President, Prime Minister and leaders across all party lines pay their last respect

December 28, 2024 – Former Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh was laid to rest today with the last rites being performed at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi at around 11:45 am. The 13th PM of India had passed away on December 26 at AIIMS Delhi and was given a State funeral with full military honours.

Dr Singh’s body was brought to the crematorium in a flower-bedecked vehicle at around 11:00 am escorted by soldiers. Leaders across all political parties attended the last rites. Present at the crematorium to pay their last respects were President of India Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, BJP chief JP Nadda, Sonia Gandhi and several others. Also present were the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and the Foreign Minister of Mauritius, Dhananjay Ramful.

The last salute was given to the departed leader by President Murmu. After the ceremonical guard of honour, the last rites were performed.

Earlier, the mortal remains of the former PM and world statesman were brought to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters from his residence. The body was kept there for an hour from 8:30 am so that Congress Party workers and others could pay their last respect. The funeral procession then left the Congress HQ amid chants of Manmohan Singh amar rahe with scores of party workers and leaders walking along.

Dr Manmohan Singh is survived by his wife Gursharan Kaur and three daughters - Upinder Singh, Amrit Singh and Daman Singh.

Saturday, December 28, has been declared a half-day holiday in all Central government offices and public sector undertakings. State mourning has been declared for seven days until January 1.
