The High Court has directed to constitute a SIT to further probe the matter
The Punjab & Haryana High Court has slammed the Punjab Police on the observation that it had allowed the use of a senior officer's room at a police station for a TV interview with infamous gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
According to media reports, the Court directed constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), to further probe the matter and also find out the nexus between the cops and Bishnoi.
This decision was taken by the Division Bench of Justice Anupinder SIngh Grewal and Lapita Banerji.
As per media reports the Bench made the remark while hearing a Suo Moto matter related to inmates' 'use of mobile phones in the jail premises'.
“The police officers allowed the criminal to use electronic device and provided a studio-like facility to conduct the interview which tends to glorify crime with the potential to facilitate other crimes including extortion by the criminal and his associates. Involvement of the police officers may suggest receipt of illegal gratification from the criminal or his associates and constitute offences under Prevention of Corruption Act. Therefore, the case requires further investigation”, said the Court Bench, as per Bar & Bench.
Lawrence Bishnoi, the gangster who is a suspect in the murder case of Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu also known as Sidhu Moosewala, had his interview aired on a news channel in the year 2023.
