Govt Mandates Switch to PNG; May Stop LPG Refills

Government may halt LPG supply in areas with PNG access to manage energy crisis; move aims to reduce fuel dependency and strengthen gas distribution

 |

March 26, 2026 – In an attempt to move consumer dependence away from Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has said that in areas where Piped Natural Gas (PNG) is available domestic consumers will be required to take PNG connections. Failure to do so may result in the stoppage of  LPG supply within three months to those households which have access to PNG .

The Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026 issued on March 24 by the government is apparently being taken to reduce dependence on a single fuel source and to create a more balanced and robust gas supply system. Adopting PNG will mean continuous supply through pipelines and eliminating the need for booking refills.

Ministry officials have said that City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies will intimate potential LPG consumers to switch to PNG. Authorities have been told to grant permission to CGDs within stipulated timeframe failing which approvals will be considered granted. The order has been issued under the Essential Commodities Act.

In areas where PNG is available, LPG usage will be reduced so that it can be supplied to other regions. However, relief will be provided to people in case of technical difficulties.

The Ministry also clarified that the country has sufficient reserves of petrol and diesel. This statement comes on the back of the ongoing conflict in West Asia and restrictions imposed on transit of LPG vessels via the Strait of Hormuz.
