Udaipur leader Gulab Chand Kataria appointed Governor of Punjab

The appointments were announced late night on 27 July

In a major gubernnatorial announcement, Gulab Chand Kataria, former BJP leader from Udaipur has been appointed as Governor of Punjab. At the time of this appointment Kataria was serving as the Governor of Assam.

This reappointment was announced as part of a major gubernatorial announcement made by the office of President Draupadi Murmu, late night on 27 July. This announcement resulted in the appointment of 6 new Governors and reshuffling of Governors across three states, as follows:

  1. Gulab Chand Kataria: Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh (prev. Gov of Assam)
  2. Haribhaur Kisanrao Bagde: Governor of Rajasthan
  3. Lakshman Prasad Acharya: Governor of Assam with additional charge of Manipur (prev. Gov of Sikkim)
  4. Santosh Kumar Gangwar: Governor of Jharkhand
  5. Om Prakash Mathur: Governor of Sikkim
  6. Jishnu Dev Verma: Governor of Telangana
  7. Raman Deka: Governor of Chhattisgarh
  8. CH Vijayashankar: Governor of Meghalaya
  9. K Kailashnathan: Lt. Governor of Puducherry

The appointment will be effective from the date of taking charge of respective offices.

What is Gubernatorial
Gubernatorial means, related to the Govenor of a state, be it in India or the United States. Hence any government order related to Governor of a State is termed Gubernatorial. Depending on the type of political region or polity, a governor may be either appointed or elected, and the governor's powers can vary significantly, depending on the public laws in place locally. The adjective pertaining to a governor is gubernatorial, from the Latin root gubernare.

Governor Terms and Transfers

  • President may transfer a Governor appointed to one state to another state for the rest of the term.
  • Governor holds office for a term of 5 years, subject to the pleasure of the President. He can resign at any time by addressing a resignation to the President.
  • Supreme Court has held that the pleasure of the President is not justifiable.
  • Governor has no security of tenure and no fixed term of office. He may be removed by the President at any time.
  • Constitution does not lay down any grounds upon which a Governor may be removed by the President.
  • Governor can hold office beyond his term of five years until his successor takes charge.
