IAF Sukhoi Jet Crashes in Assam: Two Pilots Killed

Two Indian Air Force pilots died of fatal injuries when their Su-30 MKI fighter jet crashed near Jorhat in Assam on Thursday evening during a training mission

March 6, 2026 – Two Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots were killed after their Sukhoi Su-30 MKI fighter jet crashed in Assam while on a training mission on Thursday (March 5). The aircraft had lost radar contact at 7:42 pm, shortly after take-off from the Jorhat airbase, and crashed in the Karbi Anglong area, approximately 60 km from Jorhat.

"An IAF Su-30 MKI is reported overdue. The aircraft had taken off from Jorhat, Assam and was last in contact at 7.42 pm," the IAF said on social media after the jet went missing.

A rescue operation was carried out by the local authorities after locals reported a loud explosion from near the crash site.

IAF has identified the deceased pilots as Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar. In a condolence message on X, it wrote, “"All personnel of the IAF express sincere condolences, and stand firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief.”

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has mourned the loss of the two pilots saying, "Their courage and service to the nation will always be remembered with pride and gratitude."

The Air Force operates a fleet of more than 260 Russian-origin Su-30 MKIs which was inducted into the Air Force in the early 2000s.
