Petrol Boats Still Running in Pichola Despite Court Orders

Illegal boating services and renting boats for pre-wedding shoots by hotel owners

Udaipur, February 14,2025 - Udaipur’s famous Pichola Lake is being openly used by hotel owners for boating services, despite a ban by the High Court. The Municipal Corporation has not taken any action against them. These boats are causing revenue loss and violating court orders.

The High Court had banned petrol and diesel boats in Fatehsagar and Pichola lakes. The municipal corporation introduced solar-powered government boats 10 months ago. However, hotel owners have not shifted to eco-friendly boats and continue using petrol boats without restrictions.

Hotel operators are not only transporting their guests but also providing boating services to outside tourists. They are even renting boats for pre-wedding shoots, which is unauthorized. They have modified their boats without approval, violating rules.

Revenue Loss to the Government

Hotels are charging tourists between Rs 1,000/- to Rs 1,500/- for boat rides, keeping all the money. They do not have any government-approved contracts, leading to losses for the Municipal Corporation. Despite strict rules, the State Lake Development Authority has not taken any action. Authorities are silent, raising concerns about possible collusion.

Steps Needed to Protect Pichola Lake

  • Only hotels without road access should be allowed limited eco-friendly boats.

  • A new government contract should regulate hotel boat services.

  • All jetties should be removed, and tourists should board boats from a single designated jetty.

  • Hotels should have only one jetty for guest transport.
