India Reports 500 Million Cyber Attacks in Just Three Months

India is projected to face nearly 1 trillion cyberattacks annually by 2033, with estimates reaching 17 trillion attacks by 2047. This alarming trend has raised concerns among cybersecurity experts about the nation's digital safety.

Need for Stronger Cyber Defense

A recent report by the non-profit organization Prahar emphasizes the urgent need for a robust cyber defense system. The report indicates that India’s growing digital ecosystem exposes it to increasing risks. 

Recent Cyberattack Incidents

Several notable cyberattacks have occurred, including incidents involving AIIMS and various airlines. These cases highlight the threats posed by covert cyber entities operating in the country.

Surge in Cyberattacks in 2023

In 2023, India experienced over 79 million cyberattacks, marking a 15% increase from the previous year. This statistic ranks India third globally for the highest number of cyber incidents. The escalation of attacks has continued into 2024.

Record Number of Attacks in 2024

The first quarter of 2024 saw a significant rise in cyber incidents, with over 500 million attacks  reported within just three months. Additionally, there was a 46% increase in cyberattacks during the second quarter compared to the same period in 2023.

Financial Losses Due to Cybercrime

Globally, there has been a 76% increase in cyberattacks in the first quarter of 2024, with India being one of the most affected nations. In just the first four months of 2024, India reported losses of more than Rs 1,750 crore  due to cybercrime, based on  7.4 lakh complaints filed through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal.

The continuous rise in cyber threats emphasizes the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures in India. The government and organizations must take proactive steps to safeguard the digital landscape from these escalating threats.
