India is set to build its largest deep water port, Vadhvan Port, near Dahanu, about 110km from Mumbai. PM Narendra Modi recently laid the foundation stone for this major project in Palghar, Maharashtra. 

The port, with an estimated investment of Rs 76,220 crore, will be developed in two phases. Once completed, it is expected to be among the top 10 ports in the world. 

Vadhvan Port will be developed by Vadhvan Port Project Ltd, a joint venture between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority Ltd (holding a 74% stake) and the Maharashtra Maritime Board (holding the rest). 

The project includes building infrastructure, terminals, and commercial facilities. It will also improve road and rail connections, supported by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Ministry of Railways. 

The port will have nine container terminals, four multipurpose berths, four liquid cargo berths, a Ro-Ro berth, and a coast guard berth. 

To make way for the port, 1,448 hectares of sea area will be reclaimed, and 10.14 km of offshore breakwater and cargo storage facilities will be constructed.
