India Launches Next Gen Chip Based e-Passports in UAE
Global rollout of ICAO-compliant e-passports begins with enhanced security, faster immigration, and RFID technology
Oct 30, 2025 - India has begun issuing state-of-the-art chip-enabled e-passports worldwide. The Indian Consulate in Dubai launched the Global Passport Seva Programme (GPSP 2.0) from October 28 thus introducing a major technology advancement in passport services for the Indian expats community.
Starting this month, the Global Passport Seva Programme 2.0 has been launched at Indian embassies and consulates in Gulf countries and Europe. These e-passports will be issued in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards. The initiative will be implemented in phases across India’s 195 missions and service centres around the world.
In India, some regional passport offices have already started issuing such chip-based passports after a pilot launch earlier this year in Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Jaipur and Hyderabad
The new passport will contain a chip with digitised data. This will hold the holder’s complete information – including name, date of birth, passport number and biometric date like digital photo and fingerprints. The details will be both printed on the booklet and stored in a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip. The booklet will also have an antenna which will allow reading of the chip wirelessly using RFID. The information stored in the chip can be read by interface machines at airports worldwide, which will make immigration processes easier. Tampering with the data will be virtually impossible.
The key benefits of the e-passport will be enhanced security, faster processing and compliance with global standards.
