India to Elect New Vice President on Sept. 9
Nominations open August 7; vote on September 9; 782 MPs to elect next Vice President next month
Aug 1, 2025 - The election for the post of India’s Vice President (VP) will be held on September 9. This was announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI) today. The post of VP had fallen vacant when Jagdeep Dhankhar had suddenly quit office on July 21, 2025.
As per the ECI, notification will be issued on August 7 for filing nominations. Last date for filing would be August 21. Scrutiny will be on August 22 and withdrawal of nomination on August 25.
PC Mody, Rajya Sabha Secretary General, had been appointed on July 25 as the Returning Officer for the election. He will oversee nomination, scrutiny, voting counting, and declaration of results
Voting will take place at the Parliament House, via secret ballot, following the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system of proportional representation. Votes are cast by ranking candidates in order of preference.
The Electoral College comprises of 788 MPs – 233 elected members of Rajya Sabha, 12 nominated members of Rajya Sabha (RS) and 543 elected members of the Lok Sabha (LS). But at present there are 782 MPs with five seats currently vacant in RS and one vacant in LS, according to the ECl.
