Indian Man Released After 27 years From Pakistan Jail

Gopal Dass returned to India this afternoon, he was set free from Central Jail of Lahore where he was serving life imprisonment on charges of spying. He was arrested in year 1984 while entering Pakistani border by mistake and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987.

 
He returned home after spending more than half of his life in a Pakistani jail. Gopal Dass a 50 year old man has a satisfactory smile on his face, but also many complains to Indian authorities for not doing much for Indian prisoners lodged in Pakistani jails. He was arrested in year 1984 while entering Pakistani border by mistake and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987. While talking to media, he said that 32 Indian nationals who have completed their jail term, are still suffering due to lack on initiative on the part of the Indian Government. Though his family disagreed on the charges slapped on Gopal Dass, they said that he was an innocent man who just passed into Pakistani border by mistake while visiting his uncle staying on the border of Jammu and Kashmir. Gopal Dass was released on humanitarian ground by Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari. Pakistani authority said that this was done to honor the appeal of Indian Supreme Court to Government of Pakistan. The Supreme Court said that “we cannot give any direction to Pakistani authorities because we have no jurisdiction over them; however that does not prevent us from making a request to the Pakistani authorities to consider the appeal of the petitioner. Indian authorities have done all that they could do in the matter. The writ petition was filed in Supereme Court by Gopal Dass’s brother. The emotional family members of Gopal Dass received him at Attari border checkpoint, 30 kms from Amritsar.
