Indian Navy Launches Op Urja Suraksha to Escort Oil Vessels Through Troubled Waters
More than five frontline warships have been deployed to guide and safeguard the ships on their voyage to Indian ports after they have exited the Iran-controlled choke point of the Strait
March 28, 2026 – The Indian Navy has launched Operation Urja Suraksha in order to safely escort Indian-flagged vessels carrying vital energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and beyond. As per reports, more than five frontline warships have been deployed to guide and safeguard the ships on their voyage to Indian ports after they have exited the Iran-controlled choke point of the Strait.
According to an IANS News Service report, the Operation Urja Suraksha is being carried out with the “highest degree of caution and minimal publicity” after India received the nod from Iran for safe transit of its vessels through the water body. The Indian Navy ships, which include destroyers and frigates, have not entered the Strait but are deployed in the trouble zones around the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Once the merchant vessels exit the Strait of Hormuz and enter the Gulf of Oman, they are individually approached and guided by the Navy with precise instructions and safety procedures to be followed.
The Indian government is ensuring full protection to the vessels transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and crude oil. As per reports, 20 of the vessels in the Persian Gulf are tagged as high-priority for their cargo of LNG, LPG and crude oil.
There were 22 Indian-flagged vessels with more than 600 crew members stranded in the western Persian Gulf plus three ships with 76 seafarers east of the Strait of Hormuz, according to India’s Shipping Ministry.
