Indian Stock Market Tanks as Geopolitical Tensions Rise
Indian stock markets witnessed a sharp sell-off as global risk-off sentiment, Middle East geopolitical unrest and rising crude oil prices pushed the Sensex down by over 1100 points and Nifty into deep red territory
March 4, 2026 - The Indian stock market saw a sharp sell-off on Wednesday (March 4), with both the key indices tanking heavily amid the Middle East unrest which has made investors nervous as the risk of the conflict spreading further has gone up.
Global risk-off sentiment and geopolitical stress led India’s benchmark indices to end significantly lower. Sensex was down by more than 1,000 points while Nifty also ended deep in the red — reflecting the broad investor mood of extreme caution.
At the close of trade, Sensex was down by 1123 points at 79,116 while Nifty shut at 24,480, down 385 points.
Equities are underperforming global peers and remain under selling pressure on rising crude prices and geopolitical uncertainty. Brent crude jumped nearly 9% to around $85 per barrel.
A market analysis showed that about 80% of Indian listed stocks are in a bear market. On Wednesday, at close of trade all the major sectoral indices closed in the negative territory, with Infra, PSU Bank, Realty, Media, Oil & Gas, Auto, Metal down 2-4%.
Key Market Drivers:
- Middle East geopolitical risk because of the escalating war between US-Israel and Iran
- Rising crude oil prices which have, in India, led to inflation concerns and worries about weakening rupee and slower economic growth.
- High volatility because of poor investor sentiments.
- Weak global markets with South Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Hong Kong markets trading sharply lower and US markets also ending in the red
- FII sell-off which has reduced liquidity in the market.
