Dec 1, 2025 - In the year 2025, Indian students and workers accounted for the largest share of visa holders leaving the United Kingdom. During this period, nearly 74,000 Indians left the UK. According to the latest data released by the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS), net migration from the UK stood at 204,000 in the year ending June 2025, which is an 80% fall from the 2023 peak. Compared to 2023, this figure represents a significant decline in the number of migrants.

“Indian was the most common non-EU nationality to emigrate (or leave) from the UK,” said the ONS in a release.

The ONS data shows that during this period, around 45,000 Indians on study visas and 22,000 Indians on work visas left the country. Additionally, 7,000 Indian nationals under “other” visa categories also departed the UK, taking the total number of exiting Indians to 74,000. In the same period, around 42,000 Chinese nationals left the country, making China the second-highest source of outgoing migrants.

Despite the high number of Indians leaving the UK, they also received the highest number of visas during this period — 90,000 study visas and 46,000 work visas. Experts say that this immigration trend highlights the growing significance of Indians in the UK, despite various challenges.

According to the ONS, “Indian, Pakistani, Chinese and Nigerian are regularly among the top five most frequent non-EU+ nationalities for long-term immigration.”
