Middle East Conflict Cause for Concern: PM Modi to Parliament
PM Narendra Modi calls Middle East conflict 'worrisome,' warns of global energy crisis, trade disruptions, and impact on India’s fuel supply and economy
March 24, 2026 - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as “worrisome” warning that it has triggered a serious global energy crisis and disrupted international trade routes. PM Modi said this on Tuesday (March 24) while addressing the Rajya Sabha on the current global situation.
The PM noted that the war, now in its fourth week, has affected the supply of petrol, diesel, gas and fertilisers to India, while also posing significant economic and strategic challenges for the country and assured that country was actively working to secure energy supplies by sourcing oil and gas from multiple countries and maintaining adequate reserves, while also increasing domestic production.
Seven empowered groups had been created to monitor key sectors such as fuel, fertilisers, supply chains and inflation, he said, and urged States to act together to prevent hoarding and ensure stability. He reiterated that “war is not in favour of humanity” and stressed that prolonged conflict could have severe global economic and humanitarian consequences.
The Prime Minister said India was in continuous contact with major stakeholders including Iran, Israel and the United States, pushing for de-escalation and the reopening of critical shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz.
He also highlighted that the safety of Indians abroad remains the government’s top priority, noting that over 3.75 lakh citizens have been brought back safely, including more than 1,000 evacuees from Iran.
On Monday, the Prime Minister had said India’s economic fundamentals remain strong and that the country has sufficient fuel and coal reserves, but cautioned that if the conflict continues for a longer period, it could lead to long-term challenges for both India and the global economy.
