Lok Sabha Intrusion Incident exposes Parliament Security Breach

A man and a woman were arrested outside the Parliament building, when they were protesting with yellow smoke.

Two men were detained after they jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery and opened canisters that emitted yellow smoke. This happened today, 13 December, the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack. Security personnel outside the Parliament, caught two more people, a man named Amol (25) and Neelam (42) while they were protesting near the New Delhi Transport Bhavan.

Live television footage of the proceedings showed two men jumping into the LS chamber and then jumping from desk to desk with canisters emitting yellow smoke, while the MPs were attempting to catch them. The proceedings of the both the Houses was adjourned. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that the matter is being investigated on top priority. The Houses resumed business at 2PM.

The Delhi Police has the responsibility of providing security cover outside the Parliament, while the securty within the Parliament and at the entry and exit gates is not within the ambit of the Delhi Police. Parliament Sercurity Services and CRPF have detained the men inside the building. The men who entered the Parliament did so with regular passes and after a security check was conducted. However, they managed to sneak in the canisters. The smoke that emitted from the canisters has been classified as harmless.
