Iran Allows Indian Tankers Through Strait of Hormuz: Sources
Iran permits safe passage for India-flagged tankers through the Strait of Hormuz after diplomatic talks between EAM S Jaishankar and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, say sources
March 12, 2026 - Iran has allowed India-flagged tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz after diplomatic talks between India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi late on Tuesday (March 10), sources say.
At least two Indian-flagged tankers, Pushpak and Parimal, were allowed safe passage through the Strait, as per reports. Vessels from the US, Europe and Israel continue to be under risks of strikes by Iran while Iranian authorities have reportedly allowed Indian tankers to continue using the route.
This is seen as a big positive step for India amid the LPG shortage currently in the country because of the ongoing Middle East conflict. The US-Israel war with Iran has led to the closing of the Strait of Hormuz which is a crucial sea route through which India gets 85-90% of its LPG imports, heavily relying on the Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar for 60-65% of its total LPG demand.
