Iran Warns Trump Against Interfering in Domestic Unrest

At least 10 killed as Iran faces nationwide protests over economic crisis, currency collapse and inflation

 |

Jan 3, 2026 - Iran has responded very strongly to US President Donald Trump’s warning on Friday (January 2) that if Iran “violently” intervenes with peaceful protests, the US will “come to their rescue.” “We are locked and loaded and ready to go,” Trump wrote on his social media platform.

Top official Ali Larijani warned that US interference in Iran’s domestic issues would amount to a destabilisation of the entire Middle East. Additionally, Iran's UN Ambassador Amir-Saeid Iravani called on the Security Council to condemn the US President’s statements.

At least 10 people have been reported killed in the ongoing unrest in Iran which includes mass protests and violent clashes with security forces in various cities. Demonstrations in Iran, which began in late December 2025, are driven by people voicing anger at the deep economic distress and government mismanagement after the currency plunged and inflation surged. Official figures show inflation at 42.5% in December while the rial has dropped drastically with one dollar now valued at around 1.4 million rials.

The massive protests have spread from Tehran to the Islam Republic’s rural provinces causing the closures of markets, universities and offices amid government attempts to curb the momentum. Demonstrations which began with shopkeepers and bazaar merchants soon expanded to include students and wider civil society.

Meanwhile, some Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, have shown a willingness for a dialogue with the protestors, but hardliners have taken a firm stance against them.
