Iran's Retaliatory Strike on Qatar's LNG Hub Triggers Energy Crisis
Iran’s missile strike on Qatar’s Ras Laffan LNG hub after Israel’s South Pars attack triggers a global energy crisis, disrupts gas supply and pushes oil prices above $119
March 20, 2026 - In a major escalation of the West Asia conflict, on day 20 of the war (March 19) Iran launched a missile attack on Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, the world’s largest LNG (gas export) hub knocking out around 17–20% of Qatar’s LNG export capacity. This was in retaliation for the major airstrike carried out by Israel on Iran’s South Pars gas field — the largest natural gas field in the world on March 18.
Iran has also launched missile and drone attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure targeting Saudi Arabia, UAE and apart from Qatar. The strike on Qatar caused fires and heavy damage and damage is estimated in tens of billions of dollars, with long-term supply disruption.
Iran has warned it will show “zero restraint” if attacked again and the US has warned Tehran not to target Qatar again, threatening retaliation leading to fears of wider regional war, attacks on oil shipping routes (like Strait of Hormuz) and oil prices possibly rising further
The strikes on the energy structures in the region led to heavy disruption of global gas supply. Oil prices surging briefly by more than 10% crossing the $119 per barrel mark.
US President Donald Trump has said he knew nothing in advance of the attack by Israel on the South Pars gas field - part of a reserve shared with Qatar - though reports suggest prior awareness. Speaking in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump said he had spoken to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following the strikes and told him to refrain from further attacks that could escalate a regional war on energy infrastructure.
The strike on South Pars hit processing plants, storage tanks and refineries in southern Iran. South Pars is critical to Iran’s economy and energy supply and is shared with Qatar (called the North Field on Qatar’s side), making it globally important.
Qatar’s Ras Laffan facility supplies roughly one-fifth of the world’s LNG supply and has been developed over three decades at a cost of hundreds of billions of dollars.
A major energy crisis looms with both sides showing no signs of de-escalation even as the Strait of Hormuz has been turned into a war zone with more than 700 cargo vessels stranded around major Middle Eastern ports.
