Iran-US Agree to Talks in Oman on Feb 6

United States and Iran will hold bilateral talks in Muscat after resolving disagreements over venue and format; Iran insists discussions will focus only on its nuclear programme

Feb 5, 2026 - Amid rising worries of a military conflict, the United States and Iran have agreed to hold bilateral talks on Friday (February 6) in Muscat, the capital of Oman. This followed two days of disagreement on the location and format of the agenda which threatened to call off the talks. However, several Middle Eastern leaders urged the Trump administration on Wednesday (February 4) not to follow through on threats to walk away.

According to the Iranian State media, the talks will be held in Oman with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi confirming it. Initially, the meeting was to be held in Turkey where some regional countries were to attend as observers.

The agenda for the talks is still unclear. On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that talks would have to include Iran's ballistic missile programme and nuclear issues, its support for proxy groups in the region and the rising conflict within its country.

However, Iran has indicated that the discussion will strictly involve only its nuclear programme. Previous talks with the US also in Oman had focussed only on Iran’s nuclear programme.
