Islamabad Turns Into a Fortress Ahead of Crucial US-Iran Peace Talks
Pakistan hosts crucial US-Iran peace talks in Islamabad after a fragile ceasefire in the West Asia conflict; heavy security lockdown in place as global attention turns to negotiations
April 10, 2026 - Pakistan is hosting high-stakes peace negotiations in Islamabad between the United States and Iran following the recent two-week ceasefire after intense conflict in the Middle East involving the US-Israel and Iran. The first formal round of talks is expected around April 11, with delegations already arriving in the national capital.
Pakistan has played a key mediation role in this temporary truce and now all eyes are on the meeting between the US and Iran as they will try to work out a comprehensive and permanent agreement.
Ahead of the talks, Islamabad has effectively been locked down with heavy security, road closures and restricted movement. Barricades, checkpoints, airspace surveillance and heavy patrolling have been reported in sensitive areas. A two-day local holiday was declared for Thursday and Friday in the capital which has already been turned into a fortress with armed forces patrolling key roads and government installations. Civilian movement is strictly restricted in the Red Zone which houses embassies and offices of foreign organisations as well as the Parliament. Key areas of Islamabad wore a deserted look with many schools and shops shut.
A 30-member advance team from the US had already arrived in Islamabad to review the security ahead of the delegates' arrival. Pakistan's Interior Ministry has assure the US administration of foolproof security for all the foreign delegates.
The talks are scheduled to be held at the five-star Hotel Serena and all access to this property has been cut off by a 3-km periphery. The foreign delegates are expected to stay in this hotel which has been brought under government control.
While the US delegation, reportedly led by Vice President JD Vance and accompanied by Trump’s top envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner, are said to be on their way to attend the talks, there remains speculation involving the Iranian delegation because of continued Israeli aggression. Iran has slammed Israel for ceasefire violations and brutal attacks on Lebanon and expressed doubts over the truce holding. However, Iran’s Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Moghadam said on Thursday that the Iranian delegation will attend for “serious talks based on 10 points proposed” by the Islamic Republic.
