Feb 28, 2026 - Israel launched what it has called a “pre-emptive” attack” on Iran Saturday (February 28) morning with explosions being heard in Tehran. Iran's media has reported nationwide strikes.
The strikes were believed to have occurred near the offices of Iran’s Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. There are no reports clarifying if the Iranian leader was present in the premises at the time of the attack. However, sources quoted by news reports say Khamenei was not in Tehran but had been moved to a secure location.
Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a statement saying, ”The State of Israel launched a pre-emptive attack against Iran to remove threats to the State of Israel.” US is believed to be a part of the current Israeli strikes on Iran, according to news agency AP, citing an official.
Sirens sounded across Israel to alert the public to retaliatory attacks from Iran. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said in a statement, "In the last few minutes, sirens were sounded all throughout Israel, with an advance instruction alert directly to cellular devices to stay within proximity to protected spaces. This is a proactive alert to prepare the public for the possibility of missiles being launched toward the State of Israel. The IDF emphasises that the public is requested to stay in proximity to protected spaces.”
Schools and workplaces, with exceptions for essential sectors, have been closed in Israel. Even its airspace has been closed to civilian flights, and the public has been asked to not to go to any of the country's airports.
As per sources in the know of the matter, the operation against Iran had been planned for months in coordination with the US, and that the launch date was decided a few weeks ago.
